Volunteering
The Larrakia Nation delivers multiple programs.
As part of our committment to addressing disadvantage, we encourage community members to volunteer in these programs or to become a Grass Buddy. While we can always do with an extra pair of hands, we can provide a unique opportunity in which volunteers can learn through interactive experiences about the realities of everyday life for many Aboriginal Territorians.
By supporting volunteers, we aim to bridge the gap in understanding that exists between mainstream society and marginal groups. We see that this is an important step in challenging dominant assumptions and attitudes which continue to have a detrimental effect on these groups.
Whatever your skill set is, interests and time you have available, we can explore opportunities with you to get you involved in building a better Darwn and Northern Territory. Some of our volunteers have included:
- medical graduate students (improving their understanding of poverty cultures and the implications for notions of health and health seeking behaviours)
- humanitarian graduate students (learning about the role of the non-governmnet sector in delivering services to homeless people)
- public health post-graduate students (exploring the life worlds of homeless people in order to develop appropriate health promotion/education programs)
- retirees (drawing on a lifetime of professional experiences and networks to contribute to program development)
- musicians, artists and other creative people (involved in the delivery of a range of social inclusion and wellbeing programs)
- Indigenous Community Volunteers (supporting community development projects in the arts)
If you have thoughts about volunteering in a purposive, creative and dynamic organisation, then turn these into a reality and share in the rewards.
