Tenancy Support Program
Larrakia Nation’s Tenancy Support Program (TSP) is available to residents of the following communities:
- Bagot,
- Minmarama,
- Kullaluk,
- One Mile Dam,
- Knuckey Lagoon, and
- Palmertston Indigenous Village.
The TSP offers tenants the opportunity to participate in Life Skills training which provides for one-on-one or whole of household training in the following areas:
1) knowing tenants rights and responsibilities when renting a house;
2) budgeting and money management and working out ways to pay off debts;
3) how to look after the fridge, stove, washing machine and other electrical equipment and how to keep the house a clean and safe place for adults and children, and how to keep the yard clean and safe too; and
4) working with tenants to find ways to deal with too many visitors, especially ones who bring lots of humbug to the house or community.
We know that a lot of the problems for tenants in the town communities start with the fact that there is just not enough housing for all the people who need a roof over their head and a safe place to care for the children. While we can’t change this situation fast, we can work with tenants to look after houses so they will last longer and be a better place to live; supporting better health, wellbeing and life quality of tenants.
Larrakia Nation will continue to talk to Government so that they understand the problem of homelessness a lot better. We hope the government will support us to make sure visitors to Larrakia country have adequate shelter and can lead a better life with better health when they are in Darwin.
How to become a participant in the TSP
Referrals will be directed to TSP by Yilli Reung Housing Aboriginal Corporation (YRHAC).
Individuals can also self refer to the program, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
