Native Title

Larrakia Nation was original established for native title purposes. Whilst the activities of the organisation have expanded into service delivery, native title, land ownership and recognition as the traditional owners of the region remains an important aspect for our membership.

Current considerations include the continued High Court consideration of the Larrakia Native Title claim, developments from the Kenbi Land Claim and opportunities to become a Prescribed Body Corporate under the Native Title Act. There are potential issues in relation to the distribution of royalties, administered by the Northern Land Council, and a need to establish a framework for this.

Native Title issues are part of Larrakia Nation’s objectives and need to be considered in any review of constitution. Consideration will also need to be given to the establishment of a Council of Elders to undertake representation in family and cultural matters.
