Our People & History
Often referred to as ‘Saltwater People’, we are the Aboriginal traditional custodians of all land and waters of the greater Darwin region; the largest population and administrative centre for the Northern Territory.
Traditionally, Larrakia lands include the Cox Peninsula, most of Gunn Point and much of rural Darwin. Darwin Harbour is also recognised as being part of Larrakia country.
We have always been hosts to visitors to the area. Historically, we have welcomed Indigenous visitors involved in trade and cultural activities. Since European settlement, we have continued to welcome Indigenous visitors as well as many non-Indigenous people with diverse interests in/on our country.
Today, our traditional lands are occupied by the fast developing capital city of Darwin. Within this Eurocentric context of development, we face enormous challenges. These relate to:
- the retention of our cultural identity;
- the preservation of our rich heritage; and
- fulfilment of our responsibilities in caring for our country on behalf of both our ancestors and our future generations.
Despite these daily challenges, we remain the acknowledged cultural authority over matters relating to Larrakia country and peoples.
