Night Patrol

Our Night Patrol supports people staying in the Long Grass who may be at risk of harming themselves or someone else. We do not have powers to force clients do something against there will, and nor do we have the power to arrest someone or touch their belongings. As such, the utilisation of our service is entirely voluntary.

Night patrol operates from 4pm to midnight, Monday - Saturday and from 5pm to 10pm on Sunday. We have three vehicles patrolling each night with at least two people in each vehicle. Each vehicle has its own area of operations:
                        1. Nightcliff, Casuarina area & Northern suburbs.
                        2. Parap area & CBD.
                        3. Palmerston.

Every night is different, so if it's quiet in one area we may have two vehicles operating in a busier area. We patrol all known or potential hotspots at least four times a night. This may be a slow drive by and/or a foot patrol and also includes speaking to anyone we see to gather up-to-date information on local happenings.

We also respond to any complaints reported to the police. While we are not contacted directly by the public, we are advised by police radio communications.

The police Anti Social Behaviour Hotline is 1800 272 111.  After hours this number is diverted from First Response to regular police communications. Complaints made with the usual 000 or 112 numbers can also be passed on to Night Patrol.

Our response time to any complaints will always be as fast as possible. After resolving the complaint, we then return to active patrolling looking for any other potential trouble.

Our approach to Night Patrol has been based on building trust and respect among the community. While using our service is voluntary, we have found that more than 90% of individuals offered our support accept it.

All Night Patrollers are in the process of obtaining or are qualified in:
  •   Defensive driving
  •   First Aid
  •   Certificate II in Security operations (including a criminal history check)
  •   Suicide intervention
  •   Alcohol and other drugs
  • Conflict resolution

The night patrol vehicles are a similar set up to the police vehicles except ours have padding in the back, a very visible yellow canopy with distinctive signage, yellow safety lights and a large water supply to distribute to thirsty clients.
