
Information Referral Offices
The Larrakia Nation has two Information Referral Offices (IROs); Palmerston and Casuarina. These Offices provide services to Indigenous people who are living in or visiting Darwin from remote and interstate locations. Key services components include:
- Proof Of Identification
This service allows people to access ordinary services, such as Centrelink, banks, mail, housing and transport services.
For people born in the NT
We need one referee to confirm your identity. It will take 2-3 days to issue a card unless you have your birth certificate.
Cost
$25.00 for ID card only (including one replacement card)
$37.30 for NT Birth Certificate only
$62.30 for NT Birth Certificate and one ID card only
For people born interstate
We need two referees to confirm your identity. You will also need other forms of ID (health care card, Medicare card, PAWA bill). It may take 5-6 weeks to get a birth certificate and card.
Cost
Prices will vary depending on where the birth certificate is sourced from.
- Return Home (within the NT only)
Also referred to as ‘Return to Country’, this service assists clients to return to their homelands when they get stuck in Darwin or because they need to return home.
Conditions of use include:
- Client must receive Centrelink payments.
- One Way tickets to home Community only on next available
plane/bus/train
- Client must sign Centre pay deduction form
- Client must also sign a contract to repay Larrakia Nation if
deductions are discontinued
Cost
Cost of travel plus 15% administration fee
- Accommodation
While accommodation is scarce in Darwin, we contact all the Aboriginal Hostels on a daily basis to determine where vacancies exist. We will do our best to secure accommodation for our clients.
Conditions of use include:
- Client must receive Centrelink payments
- Client must be willing to follow accommodation service guidelines
- Space is available in a suitable location, taking into account matching
“people to place” suitability
- Client must also sign a contract to repay Larrakia Nation if deductions
are discontinued
- Referrals
If we can’t help, we will refer clients to a range of services and agencies to meet their individual needs.
The IRO provides these services without requiring cash up-front as our clients do not generally have access to credit or funds when there is an emergency. Our IRO services enable clients to manage their affairs more efficiently. The service is not free and clients typically pay off their accrued debt through gradual automatic Centrelink deductions.
