Gifting Land
We, the Larrakia people, have responsibility for our traditional lands, which include the Darwin Peninsular, the Cox Peninsular and adjacent islands and land west of the Howard River. Our 'country' consists of the sea and its tidal creeks and tributaries, mud flats, monsoon vine forests, fresh water creeks, lagoons and natural springs, rainforest patches, flood plains, paper bark forests and savanna. This country continues to provide our people with sustenance, both spiritual and nutritional. However, this has become increasingly difficult due to the expansion of the capital city of Darwin across our lands. Having rights to our land is pivotal to our people fullfilling their responsibilities and leading healthy and productive lives.
We have had the longest running land rights claim in the history of the nation, and have attempted to gain land through the Native Title process. Yet we, the original inhabitants of this country, still have no land in which we can call our own. With land, we would be better placed to advance our goals for the betterment of our peoples and all the inhabitants of our country.
Rights to land would enable us to:
- Access sites of cultural significance for cultural maintenence,
- Establish a housing program to provide stability for our people to raise healthy families,
- Develop a centre to express ourselves and share our rich culture,
- Build business and enterprise leading to economic independence, and
- Construct and operate a retirement village for our elders.
If you are in a posiiton to assist us to secure land in order to advance our goals, please contact our CEO - your call will be welcomed!
